Food is good here and lots of great views from a large deck with views of Birch Bay. Only problem I have ever had was a mix up on a take away order. Restaurants on the bay close too early and would like to see bars stay open until at least 11pm again.
We three women (in our 60's and 70's) were excited to come to CJ's Beach House for Fish & Chips but were ready to walk out when the MANAGER of the restaurant stared at us and audibly uttered "Wow!" when we inquired WHEN someone was going to acknowledge that we were waiting to be seated. There were no fewer than three people behind the counter (behind the front desk where the sign said "Wait to be seated.") A simple "We'll be with you in a moment" would have been greatly appreciated. Instead we were blatantly IGNORED. When questioned as to this serious breach in basic customer service the young woman we later found out WAS THE MANAGER continued to argue with us about our attitude at being ignored. Eventually, Rose walked us to our booth and a very nice, cordial gentleman came to take our order. Our meals arrived in a reasonable amount of time and we were very happy with his follow up service. Whoever owns the restaurant should know that their "manager" could use a refresher course on how to greet patrons--that a simple "Someone will be with you in a moment" when people are waiting would go a long way toward creating GOOD WILL (which cannot be bought.) The food was good. We had to ask for more lemon as all that came with the meal was one half of a small slice. Extra lemon and tartar sauce was soon brought out. The coleslaw was dry, lacking the creamy base that was expected. The fish was lightly breaded and the fries were better than the usual fare. To sum up: Food 4 Stars Ambiance 4 Stars Service (aside from initial encounter) 5 Stars
What a great restaurant. The food was great and the service amazing. The restaurant was pretty busy with a mid week lunch crowd.
We came on a Sunday evening for early dinner. The bar next door was packed so we were a little nervous when we noticed it was sparsely filled at CJs. However, overall we had a good experience. The service was decent and the servers were friendly. They offered good suggestions and were patient when checking in. The food itself was decent. Though the fish and chips were EXCELLENT. They have been called the best fish and chips around so our expectations were high, but they lived up to them. The fish was seasoned and fried beautifully and the chips were crispy and very tasty. We also ordered the ribs which were soft and had bbq sauce, but probably about average. Their creme brulee dessert though was bomb. The ambiance is casual and an older style restaurant with a dated look. They have booths and also seating with armchairs by the window. Good for a family dinner or casual date. The price was reasonable at about 20-30 per person with steaks being more. Overall, GOOOOOD fish and chips, average environment, but good for casual and family friendly eats. If we lived closer we would eat here again.
Fish and chips. Really good fish and chips. REALLY REALLY GOOD fish and chips. I've done the Europe thing, fish and chips in Dublin and London, and these are on par with the best. Perfectly fried batter, perfectly cooked and moist fish, with fries so crispy loud they caused a Tsunami across the street on the beach. The fish was crispy enough to be picked up and eaten, first bite to last. They provide malt vinegar because of course they do, and it's delicious with the fish. And fries. Heck it was pretty good when I got some on my finger. Service was well practiced with Chris's excellent fishing skills, to a really quick kitchen with perfect food. I had an envious bite of the mrs.'s spicy prawn taco and I fell in love all over again. Chipotle sauced fried prawns, made into fresh and hot tacos. Super comfortable chairs and a beautiful view of the water.
Old school looking restaurant, padded booths, comfy chairs, all a little worn, but the smell is fresh and fine, and the view of the bay is amazing! The food, we have to talk about their delicious fried seafood. I had the Drunken Prawn tacos and fries. Seriously, come here and have that! The prawns were fried perfectly crispy, the slaw and pico was fresh, and the chipotle aioli is yum. The fries, were fried so well, I was full and still munching on the fries. They are spiced and crispy! Chris the server we had, shout out to him, he was funny and fun to speak with, seriously great service.
I was lucky enough to enjoy my dinner outside on a warm sunny evening. I thought the food was good and the Moscow mule was delicious. I got the muddy mud pie for dessert. It was good but very sweet. I took half of it home and kept it in the freezer to enjoy the next day. So good, though. This is one of the best places to eat in Birch Bay!
